Tradition
The photo above shows our original family homestead near Mound City, South Dakota, where Great Great Grandma Anna Pésa Vojta first made wine from the "prairie berries" she found growing nearby. She and her husband Josef settled in Dakota Territory after arriving from Moravia (Czechoslovakia) in 1876.
Frances Kalda Vojta continued on with the family's recipes. Frances' son, Frank Vojta (above right, with the bicycle) carried the winecrafting gene on to today's vintners, shown at left with two of their fermentation and storage tanks.
Ralph and his daughter Sandi Vojta turned the family winery into a commercial venture in Mobridge in 1998, shortly thereafter moving to Rapid City. Prairie Berry Winery relocated to its current Hill City home in 2004.
Today, Sandi is our primary vinter and makes her international award-winning wines using the fruits of the prairie as well as domestic fruit and grapes to make more than 30 different wines.
We invite you to taste the difference that five generations can make!
