"Women in Wine" know what they want: Prairie Berry Winery's Gold Digger
POSTED: MAY 05, 2009HILL CITY, SD – Prairie Berry Winery was recently awarded “Best of Class” and a Double Gold Medal for it’s semi-sweet pear wine, Gold Digger, at the National Women’s Wine Competition in Santa Rosa, California.
It’s true for many industries that there’s a dominant gender when it comes to the purchase decision. An estimated 60-70% of the wine sold in the U.S. is purchased by females. It was this statistic that gave rise to the National Women’s Wine Competition, which is judged by the leading women in the wine industry. The competition is limited to no more than 3,000 entries from around the world.
The family-owned local winery has now accumulated 341 medals and accolades for 42 different wines since first entering competitions in 2001. Fourth generation winemaker Sandi Vojta and her husband, Matt Keck, moved Prairie Berry to its current Hill City location from Rapid City in 2004. Found three and a half miles northeast of Hill City on Highway 385, the winery’s Tasting Room is open to the public daily, year-round.
