We were the first winery in the world (that we know of) to commercially produce a buffaloberry wine. Buffaloberries are native to South Dakota and they’re called buffaloberries because the buffalo used to rub on the thorny bushes in the spring to help shed their winter coats. The thorny bushes make picking a little more difficult, but we think they’re worth it.
The color in this wine comes from the Ruby Cabernet, a fruity red grape with light tannins that has been around a long time, though this is the first time our winemaker has used it. The Ruby Cabernet was co-fermented with hand-picked South Dakota buffaloberries. Buffaloberries come in a range of colors including orange and red, though on their own they would produce an almost clear wine.
