One day Ralph, our winemaker’s dad, had some laundry hanging out on the line. He looked out the window to see a buck deer with his antlers entangled in Ralph’s unmentionables.

As the story got retold, it changed a bit (as all the best stories do), and it inspired Lawrence Elk.

The name is also a nod to the famous North Dakota-born bandleader Lawrence Welk, the father of “Champagne music” who made quite a name for himself in Eastern South Dakota, where he played dances with the Hotsy Totsy Boys and the Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra.
